Members of the golf club have voted in favour of a deal with Reside Communities to construct the retirement community. The move is in line with the golf club’s efforts to address its financial problems.

The golf club joins a growing number of sporting clubs around Brisbane that have decided to let retirement developers turn a portion of their golf courses into a seniors village.

Building on Sporting Fields

The trend of building retirement villages in golf or bowls clubs emerged as developers foresee a growing demand for such developments in the near future. Retirement home operator Aura Holdings projects a 36-percent increase in the 65 and older population in the coming decade.

One way that developers intend to meet the growing demand for retirement communities is to build on underutilised assets. As a result, there have been a good number of sporting fields that are accommodating retirement facility developments. In a way, this also helps the sports clubs to address financial pressure, thus ensuring that their operation continues.

In Corinda, Aura Holdings is building a 53-apartment village in Corinda after receiving approval from Brisbane City Council. The developer has been building retirement apartment units across southeast Queensland, mostly on underutilised sports clubs.

The next step for Pacific Golf Club is to communicate the plan to the local community.
